Diseases of the Skin – Soft Tissue
The skin covers the outside of the human body and is the largest organ of the human body. It consists of the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fat. In the skin we find various glands (sweat, sebaceous,) as well as hair and in some places nails. The dermis that supports the epidermis is mainly composed of collagen and contains blood vessels and nerves. The skin has many abilities that are necessary for the survival of the human body.
It contributes to the defense against pathogenic microorganisms and prevents fluid loss. It has a particularly important role in maintaining the temperature of the human body and, through the melanin it contains, protects against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. At the same time, it participates in the production of vitamin D. Subcutaneous fat is up to 50% of the total fat in the human body and works protectively and supportively.
There are many conditions that require surgical intervention in the area of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, either for medical reasons or for cosmetic reasons. Minor surgeries involving the skin and soft tissues are performed under local anesthesia in the specialized septic clinic that operates in the doctors office. A small amount of Xylocaine (local anesthetic) is injected, resulting in total numbness of the area. Thus, the sensation of pain disappears for a period sufficient to carry out the surgical operation. Operations are performed either using a scalpel or using the latest CO2 or diode laser technology.
The advantages of using a laser are:
Completely bloodless
Painless
Excellent cosmetic result
Laser CO2 is now used in a wide range of skin procedures with excellent results. This particular laser emits an invisible beam of light which evaporates the water inside the skin cells. In this way, it causes thermal damage and destroys in a bloodless way various skin lesions such as moles, cysts, lipomas, warts, papillomas. The cosmetic result is usually excellent and the patient most of the time does not have to worry about sutures or repeated changes of the dressing. The CO2 laser creates minimal scarring and wound healing is most often excellent. In general, the laser is a technological achievement that gives an additional weapon in the hands of a specialized surgeon in order to deal with various situations in a less invasive way and with a better cosmetic result.
It must be emphasized that the cost of minor operations carried out in the office is particularly tempting , as the cost of the clinic is avoided.
The most common operations performed in the office by General Surgeon Kyritsis Alexandros are:
Melanoma of the skin
Ingrown nail
Skin cysts
Moles
Lipomas
Pressure ulcer
Warts
Pilonidal sinus
